Opis produktu:
This volume covers both the Japanese seizure of the island of Guam in December 1941 and its American recapture by amphibious assault in July-August 1944. Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana islands and was acquired by the US from Spain in 1898. In December 1941 over 5,000 Japanese troops landed on the island faced by less than 500 US and Guamanian troops. The defending forces surrendered after token resistance. Guam was the first Allied territory lost to the Japanese, making its recapture politically and psychologically important. The American invasion in 1944 was only the second two-division sized amphibious assault conducted (the first being Saipan). It was a joint Marine/Army/Navy operation. The 26-day Guam operation involved bitter fighting. Saipan and Guam were the most costly US Marine Corps battles to this point in the war and only Iwo Jima and Okinawa would cost them more men. The fighting was characterised by a series of major Japanese mistakes, however. They allowed 2,500 men to be bottled up on the Orote peninsula and wiped out in the first days of the operation. Within 72 hours of the US landing the Japanese launched an all-or-nothing counterattack that destroyed most of their combat units and wiped out 90 per cent of their officers. If the Japanese had not squandered their forces in this way, American losses on Guam would undoubtedly have been even higher.
