Opis produktu:
"The Chechen struggle against Russian domination, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the increasing importance of the region’s oil reserves provide the background to both Chechen Wars. In 1994 war broke out after Russia, which had always refused to recognise Chechnyan sovereignty, moved into Chechnya as a response to that country sending forces to support other rebelling states. This book traces the progress of the wars, following the pattern of initial Russian advance, urban battles such as Grozny, and prolonged guerrilla warfare based in the mountainous regions that is common to both. It assesses how the wars have torn apart the fabric of Chechen society and their impact on Russia itself, where they have influenced presidential elections and widened the gulf between the military and the rest of society. The 1996 Khasasvyurt Agreements, which ended the first war, failed to solve the problem of Chechnya’s legal status but postponed a decision until 2001, thereby also failing to address many of the tensions that led to the conflict. The Second War broke out in 1999 and continues.
This book considers the impact of the Chechen Wars on the stability of a region that links Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. In military terms the wars may start an era of asymmetric warfare, so their lessons are relevant to world armies today. Within Russia, the Chechen Wars represent the death struggle of the Soviet military system and will determine Russia’s ability to develop as a democratic nation."
