This book is the first in a two-part study that, by drawing on actual training documents, and veterans’ descriptions, explains and illustrates the specific ’bread-and-butter’ of infantry tactics: who did what, how, in what direction, with what resources, against what type of resistance, with what probable result? The main focus is on describing and comparing US, British and German tactics in Europe. The evolution of weapons and tactics during the war are traced and the different kinds of fighting are compared. This volume covers from the squad/section of about ten men, through the platoon of three squads, up to the company of three platoons - about 100 or 150 men - with the few support weapons they carry themselves.
