Opis produktu:

Thoroughly documented reference identifies guns used in America during eastern settlement and westward expansion. The highly readable survey describes the traders, trappers, soldiers, and Native Americans who used and sold weapons as well as those who made them. 68 rare illustrations depict everything from antique muskets and revolving pistols to bullet molds and powder horns.

This excellent reference work identifies the guns used in America during the era of eastern settlement and the westward advance of the frontier — particularly the arms used in the West during the first half of the nineteenth century. More than a descriptive record of gun types, the book relates the weapons to the people who made, sold, and used them. Accompanying chapters on "Arming the American Indian, “Personal Weapons of the Traders and Trappers," as well as surveys of military arms, small cannon, and other accessories are rare illustrations of antique muskets, repeating rifles, pistols, flintlock guns, Colt revolvers, powder horns, bullet molds, boat cannon, and other weapons — all clearly identified

The first story takes place on July 30, 1609 when a fellow killed a captured Iroquois with a single shot from an arquebus. From there it goes on to to the mid 1800's ending with the first battle of the Mexican War. ==The treatment that the book gives these guns is a combination of technical, especially as this was the time of great improvements from the matchlock of 1609 to Colt's revolvers, and of the history of their use such as that by Walker which resulted in the definition of the Walker Colt. It is illustrated with 68 line drawings that show both the weapons and the people who used them.

This book covers an area that has largely been ignored in other books. It is well written and recommended for readers with this interest.
