This reference book provides an authoritative and well-illustrated 100-year overview of the fascinating history of the cargo/troop-carrying trucks, wreckers, tankers, ambulances, communications vehicles and other specialized types that provide technical support to the front-line troops.

Part One of the book is a 92-page history of military vehicles covering motor transport before/during WW I, the U.S. Army Libetry designs, Brit military vehicles between the wars, German MV during WW II, the Jeep, half-tracks, Soviet WW II MV, postwar NATO influences, recce/special ops MV, heavy equipment MV and so on.

Part Two - the larger section - is a country-by-country 'Directory of Military Vehicles' covering designs from Australia to Yugoslavia. Here can be found cargo and personnel carriers, trucks/tractors, car/tractors, artillery tractors, tank transporters, ambulances, motor tricycles, commo vehicles and so on manufactured by GAZ, Austin, Krupp, Renaults, Dodge, Bedford, Alfa-Romeo, GMC, Humber, Citroen, ZiL, Thornycroft, Willys, Nissan, among others.

Entries range from one-half to one page. A select few - Scammell Pioneer, Kubelwagen, GMC 'deuce-and-a-half, etc. - get two pages. Light on history, the write-ups describe the vehicles, various models, etc. Specs sidebars list type, manufacturer, production, engine, transmission and so on.
 

 

About the Author

Pat Ware was the founding editor of Classic Military Vehicle magazine in 2001 and continues as a major contributor to this day. He is also military editor for Land Rover Enthusiast magazine and is well known as a knowledgeable commentator at the yearly War & Peace Show at Beltring in Kent, England.
