Opis produktu:

"A gallant officer, a superb airman, and an indomitable fighter . . . [He] rendered decisive assistance during a critical stage of operations. "

—Harry S. Truman, Medal of Honor Citation

In a war known for turning men into heroes, Jefferson J. DeBlanc stands out. A fighter pilot in World War II, he first saw action in the air above Guadalcanal, an important turning point in the war in the Pacific.

DeBlanc became a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve in July 1942. Although he had limited experience in the F4F Wildcat, he joined the VMF-112 Marine Corps unit and became a Wildcat pilot. Within two weeks, the war began for DeBlanc. He was sent overseas to the island of Guadalcanal in early November of that year. For months, Guadalcanal, code-named Cactus, had been a deadly battlefield as Allied forces struggled to stop Japanese expansion.

It was here, in the air above the Solomon Island chain, that Jefferson DeBlanc proved himself as a pilot. On his first day, DeBlanc and a partner shot down two Betty bombers. He was promoted to second in command and shot down two fighter planes the second day. Soon, DeBlanc was leading his own squadron, becoming a member of the elite Marine Fighter Aces. He shot down five Japanese planes the day he had to bail from his own fighter. DeBlanc was rescued by coastal watchers and returned to duty immediately. For this display of heroism, he received the Medal of Honor. These are DeBlanc's personal experiences about the war that changed the world.
